jalkani juurtuneet maahan.
Otsani halkoo taivasta,
käsivarsillani kannattelen laulua.
Raajani katkeilevat, putoilevat.
Naava kuivuu, iho repeilee.
Sormeni eivät enää puhkea soittoon,
vesi ei enää virtaa suonissani.
Riisuudun elämästä.
Pian jäljellä on vain harmaa hiljaisuus.
Mutta tässä seison vielä pitkään,
ainiaan.

Lichen dries, skin tears.

Viimeinen ennemerkki ilmestyi:
hohtavan musta korppi istui pihapuulleni,
lehtensä ja kaarnansa jo kauan sitten pudottaneelle
ja lankesi sitten kuolleena kelon juurelle.
Jo iäisyyden olin vartonut viimeistä merkkiä.
Pakkasin konttini täyteen lauluja ja muistoja.
Kera virsujen ja vaeltajan sauvan lähdin,
jätin hyvästit seudulle, jota olen aina vihannut.
Kuljen kätkettyjä polkuja, salaisia reittejä,
kaukana ihmisten pihoilta ja pelloilta.
Aarniokorpien yli ja hiidenrämeiden halki,
päin kohti viimeistä päämäärää, jota ei ole.
En ole koskaan perillä.
Askel askeleelta sulaudun varjoihin.
Murenen tuuleen, rapistun kallion koloihin
kunnes en enää ole.

The last omen appeared:
a shining black raven perched on my yard tree,
which has shed its leaves and bark a long time ago,
and then fell dead on the ground.
For an eternity I had awaited for the last sign.
I packed my backpack full of songs and memories.
With birchbark shoes and the wanderer's staff I left
and bade farewell to the land which I have always hated.
I travel on hidden paths, secret routes,
far from the yards and fields of man
Over old-growth forests and through devil swamps,
towards the final destination which doesn't exist
I will never arrive there
Step by step I blend into the shadows,
crumble into the wind and into crags of the rocks
until I no longer am.

"Missä olet, Kylväjä, Kyntäjä, Niittäjä?
Missä on kiiltävä terä viikatteen?"
huutaa vaivainen tähkä,
lakoamista halajava.
Tuhat kääntöpiiriä olen ylittänyt
eikä kivi rinnassani ole vieläkään vaiennut.
Revenneiden vaateriepujeni rinnuksilla
pinttynyt tahra silmukkaristin muotoinen.
Elämä on kääpä sielun puun kyljessä.

"Where art thou, Sower, Plower, Reaper?
Where is the shining blade of thy scythe?"
cries a dismal spike
longing to fall.
A thousand tropics I have crossed
and still the stone in my chest hasn't quieted.
On the breast of my torn clothes
a stale stain in shape of an ankh.
Life is a polypore on the side of the soul's tree.

Tähän käyn maaten, suljen silmät tuulen voimistuvaan virteen.
Äiti Luonto, laske multaa, sammalt' ylle,
murra syömen kivi sielun vuotaa maahan.
Iske juuri lihaan puun juoda veri ja elämä.
Kasva, uusi oksa lihastani valettu, veressäni taottu.
Sija linnunlaulun, pesä pieni tuulell' mun kahinain suovalle.
Kirkas valo kesän, raskas lumi talven suo mun kantaa.
Keväässä puhkean laulaen silmuihin.

Here I shall lay, close my eyes to the growing hymn of the wind.
Mother Nature, pour mold and moss over me,
break the stone of the heart for the soul to bleed on the ground.
Strike a root in my flesh for the tree to drink my blood and life.
Grow a new branch, molded from the flesh, made in my blood.
A place for birdsong, a nest for the wind which bequethes my rustling.
The bright light of summer, the heavy snow of winter let me carry.
In spring I burst into buds, singing.
