THE STONE AND THE SEAL
If you wander far enough and correctly astray,
from the shadow of the heart of the forest strewn with paths
you can find a mossy stone carried by the ice ages,
with an unrecognizable figure drawn with blood on its side.
This place is not for you.
Nothing you can take from here.
A banishing spell is not needed: stay or leave.
You will hardly notice that you have arrived here.
A darkened seal loaded with significance;
a bloody smudge bereft of meaning.
A blazing cry raised onto the winds of time:
I existed.
I exist.

Mikä teissä on alhaista, ei ole minun kantaa.
Mikä teissä on hyvää, ei ole teistä lähtöisin
vaan iäistä ja ajan virroissa muuttumatonta.
Tämä veri, joka suonissani virtaa, ei ole teidän.
Kaikotkaa, mykät ja levottomat henget!
Tämä veri, joka suonistani virtaa, on yksin minun.

I dig open the family graves of my ancestors;
decomposed bones, cracked and trepanned skulls
and the heirlooms passed from generation to generation:
fool's gold and baubles traded from wandering merchants.
What is honourable in you, cannot exalt me.
What is deplorable in you, is not mine to bear.

but ancient and unchanged in the streams of time.
This blood which flows in my veins is not yours.
Begone, mute and restless spirits!
This blood which flows from my veins is mine alone.
With it I paint my mark on the side of this hidden stone.
